What causes dull looking skin & which treatments can help you reclaim your glow?

Dull skin can have a sallow, unhealthy appearance, and generally doesn’t leave us feeling our best. It can also begin to feel rough in texture when left untreated.

So what causes dull & tired looking skin?

Everything from pollution and the sun to the natural ageing process and our day to day lifestyles can lead to dull, tired skin. Here are our top three tips for prevention and treatment to help you maintain or reclaim your glow:

Sunbathe Wisely

UV damage is one of the main reasons your skin looks dull. So what about vitamin D deficiency then? Studies show that to increase our vitamin D level we need to expose our arms and legs to the sun for about 15 minutes daily. Conclusion? When on holiday try to always wear a hat and keep your head in the shade. When it comes to sun cream – use it all year round – not only in the summer! At the end of the day, even the best dull skin treatment or products will be useless if you don’t protect your skin from UV damage.

Introduce Retinol

This active ingredient not only contains amazing anti-aging and brightening properties, but can also strengthen your skin and treat acne. It’s very important to use medical grade retinol in the correct concentration that suits your skin type. Don’t worry if you’re not sure which product is best for you – we can help you to choose the correct one for your skin type during a consultation. It’s important to hold off using retinol until after your summer holiday as it can increase the skin’s sensitivity to sun after treatment.

Choose Chemical Exfoliation Over Physical

Exfoliation is key! It ensures dead cells are swept away, revealing smoother, brighter, more refined skin. You can forget about expensive ”tools” like brushes, hot cloths, harsh scrub and  even Microdermabrasion. Choose chemical exfoliation over the physical one by adding (for example) some AHA serum or glycolic acid based product into your skin care regimen. Chemical exfoliators penetrate deeper into the skin and can be a great option for skin that has deep congestion, is more resistive, or can’t tolerate being scrubbed.
